Privacy Policy

ResPublica is a legal research app for iPhone and iPad. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it.
1. Who we are

2. What we store
Without an account, everything stays on your device:
- Your conversations, including the questions you type and the answers you receive
- Authorities, statutes, and arguments you add to Watches, and the alerts they generate
- Cases you have recently viewed
- Cached copies of court opinions and generated summaries
- Your settings
If you create an account, your conversations, watches, name, and profile picture are also stored in our database so they appear on your other devices. Cached opinions and summaries are not: they are retrieved again as needed.
You can delete a conversation at any time, clear cached data in Settings, or delete your account and everything stored with it from within the app.
3. What is sent to others
The app calls four external services and sends nothing else anywhere.
Anthropic, PBC — privacy policy. To generate an answer or a summary, the app sends Anthropic the question you typed, the text of any opinion or statute it retrieved while answering, and the earlier turns of that conversation. Anthropic handles this under its own privacy policy and retention practices, which we do not control.
Google (Firebase) — privacy notice. Accounts and synced data are held in Google's Firebase Authentication and Firestore. If you sign in with Apple, Apple gives us an identifier and, at your choice, a private relay email address rather than your real one.
Free Law Project (CourtListener) — privacy policy. Search terms and requests for particular opinions are sent to CourtListener, which returns case law.
The Florida Legislature. When the app reads a statute it requests that section from the Legislature's public website. Nothing about you is sent beyond the ordinary contents of a web request.
4. What we do not do
- We do not use analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or tracking software
- We do not track you across other apps or websites
- We do not sell or share personal information
- We do not knowingly collect information from children
5. Security
Data sent to Anthropic, Google, CourtListener, and the Florida Legislature travels over encrypted connections. Data on your device is protected by iOS Data Protection, which encrypts device storage when a passcode is set. Account data is readable only by the signed-in account that owns it.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
6. Your choices
- Clear cached data — in Settings
- Delete a conversation — from the menu, or the chat's own menu
- Delete your account — in Settings; removes everything stored with it
- Delete everything — remove the app from your device
- Stop sending data to Anthropic — do not type questions into the chat
7. Not legal advice
ResPublica is a research tool. It is not legal advice, not a lawyer, and not a substitute for reading the authority it retrieves. Summaries and analysis are generated by an AI model and can be wrong. Verify anything you intend to rely on or file.
8. Changes
Any changes will be posted on this page and the date above updated. Material changes will be noted in the app.
